The Cyber Career Map

How to find your place in cybersecurity, master the fundamentals, and make your skill impossible to ignore. The map I never had in 2013, written for the person I was then.

What is inside

The Map

Stance × terrain — the whole field as one legible grid, and your starting cell.

The Climb

Mason → Builder → Architect, and the trap that keeps people stuck at each stage.

Fundamentals First

The six checks AI amplifies or exposes. The blanks are your syllabus.

Make Yourself Legible

Proof over pedigree — how to make your skill impossible to ignore.

Part 1

The Map: stance and terrain

There is no bewildering list of job titles to memorise. There are two questions: what you do, and where you do it. Your stance is one of four. Your terrain is where you apply it: cloud, networks, applications, identity, malware, operational technology, and more. Any role is one cell in the grid, such as “defend, in the cloud.” A career is a path across cells.

Stance	What it is	Example roles
Build	You design and build systems to be secure from the start.	Security engineer, cloud security, AppSec, DevSecOps
Attack	You find the weaknesses before the adversary does.	Penetration tester, red team, bug bounty, offensive security
Defend	You detect, investigate and stop attacks in progress.	SOC analyst, incident responder, threat hunter, blue team
Oversee	You set direction, manage risk and answer to the business.	GRC, risk, compliance, security manager, CISO

Do this now

Circle your stance. Name your terrain. That intersection is your starting cell, and your first area to master.

Part 2

The Climb: Mason, Builder, Architect

Mastery has three stages, and most people never realise they are allowed to move up.

Mason · technical competence
Become genuinely good, and make sure you are seen. The trap: brilliant and invisible, the best analyst in the room who is the last to be promoted.
Builder · organisational influence
Translate technical work into business value, and move people who do not speak your language. The trap: the expert who cannot get a board to act.
Architect · industry legacy
Multiply yourself through mentorship and by writing down what you know. The trap: being irreplaceable, which is not power. It is a cage.

Do this now

Name the stage you are in, and the single move that would take you to the next one.

Part 3

Fundamentals first

Before you reach for the newest tool or the AI platform: artificial intelligence amplifies whatever it finds. Give it discipline and it makes you extraordinary. Give it gaps and it automates them. Tick what is already true. The blanks are your syllabus.

I can draw my environment as zones and the trust boundaries between them.
I know what I own: a real inventory of systems, accounts and data.
I understand what my logs would, and would not, show after an incident.
I reason in terms of least privilege and blast radius, not just access.
I can read an attack as a chain of steps, and name where I would break it.
I practise with reps and missions, not only tutorials and theory.

Do this now

Pick the first unticked box. That is what you study this week.

Part 4

Make yourself legible

The hard truth I learned late: the gap was never talent. It is that talent, on this continent, is too often invisible. Employers cannot hire what they cannot see. So make your skill visible on purpose.

Proof over pedigree: publish a write-up of real work you have done.
Build a portfolio an employer can open and verify, not just claims on a CV.
Earn credentials that carry an evidence trail, not only a certificate.
Put your name to your work in public, where the right people can find it.

Do this now

Name one piece of proof you will publish this month, and the date you will publish it.

Your next step

The path is far easier walked with others on it.

Ongoza Cyber Hub is a community of African practitioners walking this exact path, with the drills, missions, mentors and structure to close the gap for good.
